The Sufi heart of Rajasthan - the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti draws pilgrims of every faith, and around it sit the Adhai Din ka Jhonpra ruins, Ana Sagar lake and the Taragarh hill fort. Pushkar is 15 km over the ridge.

Rail stopover Ajmer Junction is on the main Delhi-Ahmedabad line, so it works well as a break in a longer rail trip.

What most travellers miss

  • Weekday mornings are far calmer - Thursdays, Fridays and the Urs are shoulder-to-shoulder.
  • Adhai Din ka Jhonpra sits just above the dargah and most pilgrims never walk up to it.
  • Head covering is required inside; cloth is sold at the entrance if you forget.
  • The dargah bazaar is a strong non-veg food street - sohan halwa, biryani and kebabs.

  • Nearest airport Jaipur (Sanganer) at 135 km / about 2.5 hours is the usual airport; Kishangarh is 30 km but barely served.
  • Nearest railway station Ajmer Junction is a major railhead - direct trains from Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Udaipur, including Shatabdi and Vande Bharat services.
  • Bus & road hub RSRTC and private buses run constantly from Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur to Ajmer bus stand.
  • Taxis & local transport Jaipur-Ajmer taxi is about ₹2,500-₹3,500. In town, autos are cheap; the dargah lanes are walk-only.
  • Road access & best route NH48 from Jaipur, about 2.5 hours on good highway. Delhi is 390 km, roughly 6.5-7 hours.

Things to do & travel tips

Heads must be covered inside the dargah - cloth is sold at the entrance. Leave shoes at a stand outside and keep the token. Guides and "offering" sellers work the approach lanes hard; fix any price before agreeing. Thursdays, Fridays and the annual Urs are extremely crowded - go on a weekday morning if you want space.
