The DIY deep-dive

The sweet spot for visiting Ayodhya is October to March. Give it 2 days to do it justice. Budget roughly ₹5,000-₹9,000 per person for a DIY trip. It is a good fit if you are after spiritual travel and culture and heritage. First-time DIY travellers can manage it comfortably, and it is a sensible pick for solo women travellers.

DIY route options

Fly in, two nights Direct flights now land at Ayodhya itself, which turns a long overland trip into an easy weekend.
With Varanasi Ayodhya and Varanasi are about 3 hours apart - the standard eastern-UP pairing over 4-5 days.
Lucknow road trip Purvanchal Expressway from Lucknow, 2.5-3 hours, good enough to do as a long day trip if you must.

What most travellers miss

  • Book the Ram Mandir darshan slot online before you travel - walk-up waits are long and the phone rules are strictly enforced.
  • Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan are calmer and older than the main complex, and most day-trippers skip them.
  • The temple corridor has almost no shade; a midday slot in summer is genuinely punishing.
  • Guptar Ghat at the far end is quiet even when Ram ki Paidi is packed.

How to reach

  • Nearest airport Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru and sits about 10 km from the temple area. Lucknow (135 km) is the bigger fallback.
  • Nearest railway station Ayodhya Dham Junction is the main railhead with direct trains from Delhi, Lucknow and Varanasi. Faizabad Junction, 8 km away, adds more options.
  • Bus & road hub UPSRTC buses run frequently from Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Varanasi to the Ayodhya bus stand.
  • Taxis & local transport Lucknow-Ayodhya taxi is roughly ₹3,500-₹4,500. In town, e-rickshaws cover the temple circuit cheaply; most of the core is pedestrianised.
  • Road access & best route Purvanchal Expressway from Lucknow makes it a comfortable 2.5-3 hours. Delhi is a long 690 km, so fly or take the train rather than drive.

Things to do & travel tips

The Ram Mandir uses timed entry and a strict no-phone rule - book the darshan slot online before travelling and leave bags at the hotel. The temple core is closed to vehicles, so expect a 1-2 km walk on the busiest days. Saryu aarti at Ram ki Paidi is best reached 30 minutes early for a seat on the steps.
