The DIY deep-dive

The sweet spot for visiting Prayagraj is October to March. Give it 2 days to do it justice. Budget roughly ₹5,000-₹9,000 per person for a DIY trip. It is a good fit if you are after culture and heritage and spiritual travel. First-time DIY travellers can manage it comfortably, and it is a sensible pick for solo women travellers.

DIY route options

Sangam in two days The confluence, the fort and Anand Bhavan at a comfortable pace.
With Varanasi Two and a half hours apart and the natural Ganga pairing over 4-5 days.
Magh Mela season January-February turns the sandbanks into a temporary city - extraordinary, but book far ahead and expect diversions.

What most travellers miss

  • Settle the boat fare AND whether it is per person or per boat before you step in - this is the standard overcharge here.
  • Only the Patalpuri temple and Akshayavat section of Akbar's fort are open; the rest is army-held.
  • Anand Bhavan shuts on Mondays, and the planetarium keeps its own timings.
  • Prayagraj guava in winter is worth going out of your way for.

How to reach

  • Nearest airport Prayagraj (Bamrauli) airport is 12 km from the centre with flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Varanasi (120 km) and Lucknow (200 km) are the larger alternatives.
  • Nearest railway station Prayagraj Junction is one of the busiest railheads in north India - direct trains from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Varanasi and Lucknow. Prayagraj Chheoki handles some southern routes.
  • Bus & road hub UPSRTC buses run constantly from Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur and Gorakhpur to the Civil Lines bus stand.
  • Taxis & local transport Varanasi-Prayagraj taxi is roughly ₹3,000-₹4,000. In the city, autos and e-rickshaws are cheap; the Sangam approach is walk-or-boat only.
  • Road access & best route Purvanchal and Agra-Lucknow Expressways make Lucknow about 3.5 hours and Delhi 8-9 hours. Varanasi is a straightforward 2.5-3 hours.

Things to do & travel tips

Agree the boat fare to the Sangam before you get in and confirm whether it is per person or per boat - this is the single most common overcharge here. During Magh Mela (January-February) and Kumbh the whole city reorganises around the mela grounds: book months ahead and expect long diversions. The Akbar fort is army-held, so only the Patalpuri temple and Akshayavat section are open to visitors.
