The Braj town where Krishna is said to have grown up - roughly 150 km from Delhi and doable as a weekend. Thousands of temples, evening aartis at Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir lit up after dark, and narrow lanes full of pedas and bhajans.

The sweet spot for visiting Vrindavan is October to March. Give it 2 days to do it justice. Budget roughly ₹4,000-₹7,000 per person for a DIY trip. It is a good fit if you are after spiritual travel, culture and heritage and road trips. First-time DIY travellers can manage it comfortably, and it is a sensible pick for solo women travellers.

DIY route options

The weekend classic Delhi to Vrindavan down the Yamuna Expressway, two nights, temples on foot and e-rickshaw. The easiest version and the one most people do.
Full Braj circuit Add Mathura, Govardhan and Barsana over 3-4 days for the whole Krishna belt rather than one town.
Train + rickshaw, no car Train to Mathura Junction, shared auto the 12 km to Vrindavan, e-rickshaw everywhere after that. Cheapest and avoids the parking problem entirely.

What most travellers miss

  • Banke Bihari shuts through the afternoon - plan darshan for morning or evening, not midday.
  • Prem Mandir is worth seeing after dark rather than in daylight; the whole point is the lighting.
  • Nidhivan closes before dusk and stays shut at night, whatever you have been told.
  • Park outside the old town and take an e-rickshaw - the temple lanes genuinely cannot take a car.

How to reach

  • Nearest airport Nearest airport is Delhi (IGI), about 160 km / 3-3.5 hours by road. Agra (Kheria) is closer at 70 km but has very few flights.
  • Nearest railway station Mathura Junction is the railhead, 12 km away and very well connected to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Mumbai. Vrindavan has a small branch-line station with limited service.
  • Bus & road hub Regular UPSRTC and private buses from Delhi (Sarai Kale Khan, Kashmere Gate) to Mathura, then a shared auto or e-rickshaw to Vrindavan.
  • Taxis & local transport Delhi-Vrindavan one-way taxi runs roughly ₹3,500-₹5,000. Inside town, e-rickshaws are the only sensible way - lanes are far too narrow for cars.
  • Road access & best route Yamuna Expressway from Delhi - about 3 hours door to door. Exit at Mathura and drive the last 12 km. Roads are good the whole way.

Things to do & travel tips

Leave your car at the parking outside the old town and take an e-rickshaw - the temple lanes are genuinely too narrow to drive. Banke Bihari shuts in the afternoon, so plan darshan for morning or evening. Carry a cloth bag for shoes: most temples have no shoe stand. Monkeys near Banke Bihari will take glasses and phones, so hold them tight.
