The DIY deep-dive

Milam Glacier Trek is at its best in May to June, September to October. It covers about 54 km, runs over 6–7 days, tops out near 3,870 m.

DIY route options

Classic 7-day route Start from Munsiyari and follow the standard Johar Valley line through key halts like Lilam, Bugdiar, Rilkot and Milam. The most reliable route structure for self-planned trekkers.
Slower acclimatisation route Add one buffer day around Munsiyari or an intermediate halt if you are new to long Himalayan treks, carrying heavy gear, or travelling after a long road journey.

What most travellers miss

  • Arrange permits before reaching the trailhead; border-area checks can delay your start.
  • Download offline maps and share your route plan before leaving Munsiyari.
  • Do not rush through Lilam and Bugdiar; these halts help pace the route better.
  • Keep a buffer day for weather, landslides or access delays.
  • Carry cash, basic medicines and extra warm layers because support becomes limited after the trailhead.

Where to base yourself

Munsiyari - Trailhead base Best for permits, last-minute supplies, guide coordination, network and pre-trek rest.
Lilam - First major halt Good pacing stop after the initial trail stretch; do not treat it only as a quick pass-through.
Bugdiar / Rilkot - Route halts Important overnight points for pacing the climb toward Milam.

DIY is the main way - this is the upgrade

About this trek

The Milam Glacier trek follows the old Indo-Tibetan trade route up the Johar valley from Munsiyari, past the once-prosperous Bhotia village of Milam to the snout of the Milam Glacier at about 3,870 m – the source of the Goriganga river. It is one of Kumaon’s grandest, least-crowded treks.

The trail passes deep gorges, the Bugdiar and Rilkot halts and stone villages, with the giant east face of Nanda Devi East dominating the head of the valley. As a border area, it needs an Inner Line Permit.
