About this trek

This revered trek follows the Bhagirathi from Gangotri to Gaumukh โ€” the snout of the Gangotri glacier and the source of the holy Ganga โ€” at about 3,900 m. Pilgrims and trekkers share the trail through the Gangotri National Park.

Beyond Gaumukh, a steep climb leads to Tapovan (~4,463 m), a high meadow directly beneath the spire of Mount Shivling and facing the Bhagirathi peaks โ€” one of the most dramatic campsites in the Himalaya. A national-park permit is required.
