Best Season to do the Triund Trek

The best season to do the Triund Trek is during the months of April to June and September to December. During these months, the weather is pleasant and the skies are clear, making it ideal for trekking. The temperature ranges from 10°C to 25°C during these months, making it comfortable for trekking. The monsoon season (July to August) is not recommended for the trek as the trails become slippery and dangerous.

In fact, Triund is said to be a year-round trek, which is incorrect except for early January to mid-February when the Government closes it due to heavy snow. Road – The best way to reach Triund Trek is by road. There are regular buses and taxis available from Dharamshala to Triund Trek. To and Fro Busses from Delhi, Chandigarh and Pathankot are also available.

Air – The nearest airport to Triund Trek is the Gaggal Airport or Kangra Airport at Dharamshala is about 20 km away from McLeod Ganj and is well connected to Delhi, Kullu, and Chandigarh.

Train – The nearest railway station to Triund Trek is Pathankot Railway Station, which is located at a distance of about 90 km from Dharamshala. There are few local trains passing nearby to McLeodganj or Dharamshala on the way to Kashmir. They stop at Kangra and Jogindar Nagar stations, from here you can take cab or auto to reach Dharamshala.

Detail Truind Trek Itineary:

Day 1: Bhagsu Naag waterfall to Truind Top

Truind trek start from two places one can begin their trek to Triund from either Mcleodganj or Bhagsu Naag waterfall, with the last point where any vehicle can reach is the Galu temple. There is an option of taking a cab one can take a cab from McLeod Ganj to Gallu Devi temple.

Start the trek as early as possible once you reach the Gallu Devi temple, you will see the trekking trail and then proceed on the trekking trail with the forest checkpoint. There are no charges to be paid, however, your ID card is important and your details will be logged into a book.

Additionally, your backpack will be checked for the amount of plastic you are carrying and will be checked again while you return back. Therefore, ensure to carry them back and trek responsibly.

As you traverse the gently rising trail through dense oak forests, you will come across a deep gully that leads to a rocky spur. Here, the majestic Dhauladhar range and its pyramidal peak of Mun come into view, making it an ideal spot for birdwatchers to observe various kinds of songbirds.

At around the halfway point you reach magic view café. which is a decent site to witness some lovely aerial views of Dhauladhars. From here the trail gets steeper.

There are about 22 bends on the trek. The last few switchbacks take you out of the rhododendrons and onto the Triund ridge. This open grassy ridge stretches for a kilometer south before descending into the Kangra valley. There are plenty of camping spots here, and you can even get some supplies from the tea shops.

During the trekking season, there are many dhabas at Triund where you can get a cooked meal and refreshments. It is not recommended to pack food from McLord Ganj instead of buying any packaged food you can try these local Dhaba’s and café.

You can book a room in advance at Dharamshala for an overnight stay at the forest rest house in Triund. The prices are quite reasonable, ranging from Rs 600 to Rs 800 per room. If you prefer camping, you can rent tents at Triund for around Rs 600 for a two-person tent, complete with sleeping bags. However, it is advisable to book in advance during peak times such as public holidays, as the tented accommodation may get fully booked.

Day 2: Truind Top to McLord Ganj

Rise early to witness the stunning sight of the sun rising from behind the mountains to your east. The Kangra valley is illuminated by the golden rays of the sun, making it a breathtaking view.

If you are pressed for time or have only single day, then you can make a round trip to Triund in one day, returning to McLord Ganj before nightfall. Although you will miss out on the gorgeous evening and morning sky from Triund, it is possible to complete the journey in a single day if you start early.

Descend quickly by following the same path you took to ascend. Make the most of your short day by stopping at cafes along the way. If you have more time, you can ascend further from Triund to Lahesh cave via Laka. There is a tea house at Laka, but you will need to bring your own supplies if you plan to go beyond that.

How to get fit for Triund Trek

Triund trek is classified as an Easy grade trek. Though the trek is easy, there is a good altitude gain of 3,000 feet. The continuous ascent can be quite demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

It is recommended that you have a good level of cardiovascular fitness and strength in order to complete the trek. You should also be able to walk for long periods of time and carry a backpack with your supplies.

Mcleord ganj is the last point where the ATMs are available. So, it’s better that you carry enough cash.

Triund does not have a strong connection. Usually, the network comes and goes. BSNL/Vodafone works the best in these areas

Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the heat and get the best views of the valley.

Carry enough water and snacks to keep you hydrated and energized throughout the trek.

Wear comfortable shoes with good grip as the terrain can be slippery at times.
