The DIY deep-dive

The sweet spot for visiting McLeod Ganj is March to June, September to December. Give it 3 days to do it justice. Budget roughly ₹8,000-₹14,000 per person for a DIY trip. It is a good fit if you are after spiritual travel, trekking, slow travel and solo travel. First-time DIY travellers can manage it comfortably, and it is a sensible pick for solo women travellers.

DIY route options

Overnight bus, three nights Volvo from Delhi straight to McLeod Ganj - the way most people do it, and it saves a hotel night.
With Triund Add a day for the 9 km return ridge hike from Galu Devi, or an overnight if you want the sunrise.
Slow Kangra loop Toy train up the Kangra valley, then Bir Billing or Palampur on the way out over 5-6 days.

What most travellers miss

  • Parking in McLeod Ganj is genuinely miserable - pick a hotel with its own space or leave the car in Dharamshala.
  • Walk the Lhagyal Ri kora clockwise, the way pilgrims do; it is the nicest half-hour in town.
  • Norbulingka below town is calm, beautiful and almost always skipped.
  • Monsoon brings leeches and landslides on the Triund trail - it is not the season for it.

  • Nearest airport Gaggal (Kangra) airport is 20 km / about 45 minutes, with flights from Delhi. Amritsar (200 km) and Chandigarh (250 km) are the bigger alternatives.
  • Nearest railway station Pathankot (90 km) is the nearest broad-gauge railhead. The Kangra Valley toy train runs to Kangra Mandir station, 22 km away - slow but beautiful.
  • Bus & road hub Overnight HRTC and Volvo buses run nightly from Delhi (Kashmere Gate and Majnu ka Tila) straight to McLeod Ganj - the most popular way in.
  • Taxis & local transport Dharamshala-McLeod Ganj taxi is about ₹400-₹600. Within town everything is walkable; taxis handle Naddi, Bhagsu and the Triund trailhead.
  • Road access & best route Delhi to McLeod Ganj is about 480 km, 10-12 hours via Chandigarh and Una. The last 10 km up from Dharamshala is steep and narrow.

Things to do & travel tips

Parking in McLeod Ganj is genuinely difficult - if you drive up, pick a hotel with its own space or leave the car in Dharamshala. Walk clockwise around the Lhagyal Ri kora path, as pilgrims do. For Triund, start by 7am and carry your own water; the ridge has no reliable source. Monsoon (July-August) brings leeches and landslides on the trail.
