The DIY deep-dive

The sweet spot for visiting Spiti Valley is May to October (Kunzum/Chandratal open ~June–Oct). Give it 7–9 days to do it justice. Budget roughly ₹18,000–₹25,000 / person per person for a DIY trip. It is a good fit if you are after road trips, nature, slow travel and culture and heritage. First-time DIY travellers can manage it comfortably, and it is a sensible pick for solo women travellers.

DIY route options

Shimla in, Manali out Acclimatise slowly up the Kinnaur side and exit over Kunzum La to Manali. The safest, most scenic direction.
Manali in and out Faster but riskier - you gain altitude very quickly. Only if you are short on time and already acclimatised.
Bus or self-ride HRTC buses Shimla-Reckong Peo-Kaza, or a self-ride on an Enfield. Carry fuel and buffer days.

What most travellers miss

  • Spend a night in a Langza or Komic homestay, not just in Kaza.
  • Carry enough cash - the only reliable ATM is in Kaza and often runs dry.
  • There is no fuel between Reckong Peo and Kaza - tank up fully.
  • The Pin Valley side is greener and far less visited than the Kaza villages.

Where to base yourself

Kaza The hub - fuel, ATMs, cafes and logistics. Base for the high villages.
Tabo Lower and warmer; good for acclimatising and the ancient monastery.
Mudh (Pin Valley) The greenest corner, a trek roadhead and quiet homestays.
Kibber / Langza High-village homestays for stargazing and early starts.

How to reach

  • Nearest airport Bhuntar (KUU) or Shimla (SLV); Chandigarh is the main wide-body gateway.
  • Nearest railway station Shimla or Joginder Nagar; mainline Kalka/Chandigarh.
  • Bus & road hub HRTC Shimla-Kaza and Manali-Kaza buses run in summer.
  • Taxis & local transport Limited taxis from Kaza; most travellers self-drive or hire a cab for the loop.
  • Road access & best route Two ways in: via Kinnaur (open most of the year) or via Manali-Kunzum (Jun-Oct only).

Things to do & travel tips

  • Enter via Kinnaur and exit via Manali (or reverse) to acclimatise gradually.
  • The Manali side is summer-only; the Kinnaur side stays open longer.
  • Kaza is the hub for fuel, ATMs (often down - carry cash) and permits.
  • High altitude - take it slow the first day and hydrate.
