The DIY deep-dive

The sweet spot for visiting Manali is March to June, September to December. Give it 3–4 days to do it justice. Budget roughly ₹8,000–₹15,000 per person for a DIY trip. It is a good fit if you are after nature, road trips and slow travel. First-time DIY travellers can manage it comfortably, and it is a sensible pick for solo women travellers.

DIY route options

The classic loop Base in Manali, day-trip to Solang and across the Atal Tunnel to Sissu. The easiest 3-day version.
The Spiti gateway Use Manali as the western entry to Spiti over Kunzum La - add 5-6 days for the full cold-desert circuit.
Budget / public transport Overnight HRTC Volvo from Delhi, then local buses to Solang and Vashisht. The cheapest way in.

What most travellers miss

  • Old Manali and Vashisht are far nicer to stay than the noisy Mall Road.
  • Cross the Atal Tunnel to Sissu for a completely different, emptier valley.
  • Jogini and Jana waterfalls are quieter than Solang.
  • Go midweek - weekends bring big Delhi and Punjab crowds.

Where to base yourself

Old Manali Cafes, backpackers and the river - best for a relaxed, young vibe.
Vashisht Hot springs and quieter stays across the river, with valley views.
Mall Road / New Manali Handy for transport and shopping, but busy and touristy.

  • Road access & best route NH3 via Mandi; the Atal Tunnel opens Lahaul year-round.

Things to do & travel tips

  • Book Volvo/HRTC tickets ahead in peak summer and the New Year week.
  • Rohtang needs a permit (online) and is seasonal; the Atal Tunnel does not.
  • Old Manali and Vashisht are the quieter, cafe-heavy bases.
  • Carry warm layers even in summer for Solang and the tunnel.
